I have finally come to the moment when I finally decided to come out with my cancer story. I have been casually blogging and vlogging about it but I didn't really come to the terms of finally putting it together in one single post. It's been a year now since I was diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer stage II. I was preliminary diagnosed with stage III. So, I had to do 6 cycles of chemotherapy and 3 rounds of brachytherapy. But they have to take out my uterus and my ovaries eventually. Well, to be honest when we went to see my doctor we were expecting a pregnant diagnosis. I was very positive I was pregnant since all the symptoms were there. But it turns out differently. So, my journey begins. Here, I have put together what was going through my head as I deal with the diagnosis..... ( and excuse the "brain farts" I was typing and posting through my phone in real time, so I didn't bother to edit any of it

At The Hospital - A Parody

Apparently everyone's life has to move on in spite of me being sick.

Which i would totally totally agree. I told everyone to keep pace with their own lives and never worry about me. Well i worry about me i guess... everything is totally different back home... i mean being treated back home. Although i would totally tip my cap a million times to excellent doctors specially mine ;) but then the system totally can't keep pace with me. They stroll i run. So here i am in what they call nurse station next to a nurse who is literally brushing her teeth on the emergency room sink. And a doctor who is coughing like i am not the one dying here LOL! i can see my mom's disgust and yup the emergency brushing of the nurse's teeth is commencing at the moment.... okay so stop... i am wheeling to the xray... done. Xray people can't hear me calling they are reading my name on the record as if its kind of a mantra..hey guys sick person here and I am so wanna pee... thanks to mom who makes me drink welch every second as if it is a magic drink...  it just makes me pee really...next stop blood people...done. back to the nurses' brushing station. LOL! By now i guess i have already gotten use to the needles and test i have learned to comply... okay i admit not really... i have gotten use to it...every time  a routine was missed i ask about it... okay reminder to self stop being annoying. This is something they need to take control and not me.

No hair don't care ;) shave my head before chemo does it

Mom as faithful as she is tags along making sure i drink my welch. I love you mom. And well dad was at home making sure he get me all the exotic fruits and tuna i requested. Well... my family has been so helpful really... uncles and aunts who made me pass a couple of doctors fee here and there... in the philippines we call it connections i guess...but i call it kindness. In here there's a lot of waiting... but perhaps i stop to care about it now... time is all i ever wanted... honestly... i don't want to rush nor wait... next stop ECG... OH hello there machine... i don't know whether to cry or to laugh at it... do this thing really work... or electricute me to absolute death. But turns out i survive the lie detector machine ahahahhahaah. Oh good finanally they took their surgical mask off. For what seems to be eternity... i was talking to faceless people in white... you'd probably be consider above einstein genius if you understand half of what they are saying... all i hear was nguf nguf nguf ahhahhhahah. Okay stop... mom wants me to drink welch.

Moving on... okay stop... would you believe i am at the moment wheeling on the chair cuddling my suitcase...Speaking of total awkward... id rather walk really... this thing on my lap is hell heavy... but the guy just wheeled me off... like he is actually doing me a favor...

Call me the meanest sick person in the world but you can't blame me can you...i have to rant... at this moment right now a needle is fishing through my veins... after a nurse did a through and through insertion to supposedly attach me to this liquid thing... well i guess they thought i am for barbeque. LOL! and really not funny... and yup again the pre op instructions delivered through masked nurses.... really? all i heard again was ngufnguf nguf... oh well... i needed to be okay... and i guess i need to tolerate ...after all, what can be more painful than cancer itself... so bring it on girls... go fish... LOL!
Been two days since i got out of the operating room. And so far things are fine. I know ive been impatient and had so much to rant about but this time i stop focusing on my illness and started to focus on the goodness of the people around me people who are patient with me. And yes id like to consider myself bless because i have a team of wonderful people who take good care of me. My doctors who will do everything they can to save my life... my family and friends who treated me kindly not because I am sick but just the way they used to. To friends and family thanks for treating me not sick.

Chemo

Hi guys... been a few weeks since my last hospital episode. And I've been feeling good since then. And oh, don't get me wrong... being sick and feeling good don't usually hold hands but it is the last choice really or get eaten up with sadness. Well, I have days when I just let those tears fall down and ask the inevitable "why?" Oh well,  I guess life is supposed to kick your ass (forgive the langauge...sick person talking) once in a while so you got to rise up like a hell of a hero or fall and become one of the gods.

Cancer is not funny but laughter is indeed the best medicine ;)

Well anyways, metaphor aside... this is what happened... who would have thought that a single visit to the doctor would change almost everything... this is what we sick people usually said...but it didn't really change it for me. It put my life into a STOP. "You got cancer" is definitely one you don't want to get in your mail...not in your million lifetime. But I guess I got drawn. I couldn't even remember how I felt that day. It was something unexpected of course... then I started counting years? Days? Minutes? Seconds? Or how much time do I really have? Then came all the statistics of survival... what side of it am I drawn into? I wasted no time... I thought I'd skip all the drama I get into business right away. And yes, believe it or not, I chose not to cry about it... I started to plan logistics, finances and "hiccups" right away. I got to survive this...and yes friends and family came along to take the journey with me each of them playing their roles which I will forever be thankful for.

Goofing around the neighborhood with my siblings

So, the journey began... as sad as I wanted to be... I just hold on to faith. After all the gazillion needle attacks, a "stab" in the belly which will always remind of my battle, and the prayer of hope from friends and family, here I stand await, keeping up with my favorite kardashian girls (what else can a sick person do?) ...and so ready for the next stop. Yup, chemo is just around the corner...and better be up and running on a hat shopping spree... and yup, partly one of the reason I needed to get up early in the morning in spite surgery discomfort and "turtle walk" around the house to recover fast.

 I lean to make hats

I needed those hats or werk the alien head... but seriously I don't intend to scare the kids at home. So, get me those hats or a sack over my head...LoL! ...and oh did I say I turned vegetarian too? Yup, I turned into a fish eating vegetarian...does it make sense? Oh well, I guess it just means I eat more veggies now than I usually do... and a lot of people... "experts" say it is a good thing. So I bet it is... ;)

Cancer is not contagious but a smile is.

Hey guys... well, thank spare time I am here but once again ;)  aside from my routine visits to the doc I am pretty much doing nothing except keep up with my battle. Well, its almost been a month since I was diagnosed with advance endometrial cancer. What we thought was us pregnant turned to be just.... oh cancer.... and Well, here I am fighting for dear life. Perhaps one of the hardest thing I did was come out and be open about it. Not that I am too arrogant to admit I am sick but because I don't want to be the subject of sadness. But I have always bee around and I thougt in as much as i have enjoyed sharing the good life "the beautiful"... i also want to share what is real.

The crazy bunch.

The life we tend to usually shove under the covers ... because reality most often times are scary and sad... but yes we have to give credit to the good times and the courage to embrace what is painful. But really we always have the choice... we can still be happy... i am happy... well for one i wouldn't probably see my head, my bare scalp if it wasn't for it ;) well, I guess I have to keep it short for now... apparently I needed to sleep a lot these days....

Chemo vacay with my personal nurse/sissy

But really... I am still here because of the patience of the wonderful people that help me get through it. The hospital staff who stayed calm and kind and make sure that I manage just fine. My family who hoovers over me with love and so much patience and make sure that they "forget" I am sick. I know it was hard but thanks for letting me fight it on my own terms. Friends who keep me in their thoughts and prayers. BFFs from all over the world who never stopped checking on me 24/7 and sending love and inspiration. Friends and family who help us find the best treatments and the best doctors in the world ;)  Thank you and I will always be here because of you. And after all, THERE IS LIFE AFTER CANCER.

I have been really busy these past few days and although it felt really good to be doing something a little productive, sometimes adrenaline and emotions just fills you up and to be honest some other days when you least expected it, the low swing catches you just like that and suddenly there is that surge of so many emotions you don't even know exist. You feel happy, you feel tired, you feel sad, anxious, overwhelmed all at the same time .... the whole menopause package . And although I have given quite a bit of my time scanning textbooks about it, I realized you can never be prepared when it comes. So now I just like to think of it like a secret affair... you don't really want it but it sure is hard to break free away from it. LOL!

So it seems like this menopause thing at 35 is my greatest forbidden love affair and its all right there out in the open. Okay, when my doctor told me that I may have to deal with menopause, I didn't think it was something serious. I mean all women goes through it... at least we all have to once in our lifetime. But at 35? such is a different story honey... the food cravings can be tolerated but the "moodcoaster" is something you can never dream of. Well, I'd definitely knew when it comes but sometimes I just can't control it anymore... and it turns me into a Gollum... yup menopause is THAT RING my precious... and suddenly you are not that cute anymore...you will somehow began to love and hate yourself. But there is no running away from menopause. And the sad thing is, the only drug that would somehow help me get through it is the one which caused my cancer... so I guess I am left alone... so here's how I manage it (besides having a very patient and understanding husband)

#1 I let myself just feel the emotions. I make sure that I talk about it with my husband and make him understand that although it may seem like he has something or other people has something to do with it, it is not. It is just the chemical imbalance playing in my head. So I created a "warning call" and whenever I call it out, husband gives me space to "clear my head" and let me just have mE time for myself.

#2 I look for behavior patterns - Knowing yourself is the key to minimize "emotional damage" while going through menopause. I noticed that whenever I am tired and overworked, it is when my mood starts to hit bottom. So before that happens, if I can prevent it, I stop myself from whatever I am thinking or doing and divert myself to things which calms me. Like crochet, reading a book, blogging, playing with my dog, or go out on an evening walk with my Ryan. And silence calms me a lot. So, I just learn to let go for a while of whatever is making me stress and give myself a break. If there is one thing I learn from everything I went through life... that is to stop resisting and just feel whatever you feel at the moment and eventually move on. Think of something or do something that reminds you of being happy...

#3 Don't assume everyone understands what you are going through. Sometimes when I feel frustrated I used to project my feelings to other people... in that case my husband. LOL! but then I realized it is not fair. I have to understand that my family, friends and colleagues have issues and it is something that they too have to deal with. That is why when my mood started shifting and is turning me into a Gollum, I would keep myself from saying words that would instead hurt them. I develop a self talk technique and again remind myself that it is not about them.

#4 Talk about it - It is also very helpful to talk to someone about it. Tell a trusted friend about what you are going through or talk to a counselor or a psychologist who are trained to help you go through the issues you are dealing with. There is nothing wrong with seeking help specially for someone like me who has to go through menopause at such a very young age ;) some women go through it with no problems at all... I have to deal with some hiccups and it's okay ;)

#5 Write about it. Yes, I am a blogger but there are things I choose to keep private. And literally writing about how you feel and what happens in your life is kind of a therapy. Express yourself, ink it out. Since I started to learn how to write, I have always keep a journal beside me to write down my thoughts and reflect on my life before I go to bed. And somehow facebook, twitter, and blogging didn't change that. Hence my addiction to notebooks and pens. I learned that some thoughts are meant to be written privately rather than shouting it out on my time line. The point is... write where you know you can be yourself where you know you can never be judged.

So, there are times that you feel a little down, anxious, "not being yourself",  or sad... and it is okay to feel that way. Life is a salad of emotions, savor it because it is what makes us who we are. But if those emotions are too overwhelming... don't be afraid to tell someone about it. Talk to a family you can trust, your bestfriend or make an appointment with your favorite counselor or a psychologist. Because one thing for sure, it feel good to know that someone out there understands. And it feels great to be heard.

"Stay calm, you have a full life to live." Apparently I have to keep reminding myself so often that I never need to be afraid about anything anymore, never need to rush and never need to keep pursuing things that are never meant to be... and that I could never bungee jump even if I only live once and the "you got to live life to the fullest" requirement ;) It appears that here is that near death experience notion that we need take life at full swing, do something you haven't done before, go to places you never been before and sky dive from a speeding jet. However, my life is actually quite the contrary... I have never even done a marathon or stand up for any cause at all (not just yet).

It seems like more and more I find myself taking life at a slow pace.  A slow walk instead of a marathon. It seems like waiting patiently for things to happen on its own time gives me that peace I never once have. And those little gaps between waiting comes like a perfect interlude.

So this week I did something that I always fail at doing. I started my own organic garden. Well, this is not a start to be honest. This is by far one start of my million tries to grow something. But I would patiently wait for the first sight of life forcing its way out of the seeds I have planted. And though I can't be too excited, I am anticipating that one day a life will grow.

This week Kodi was very sick.  He wasn't sleeping so well, eating, and he was shaking because of fever. But thank heavens for great vets and a couple of shots, he is running about again and doing whatever dogs do :) Also, since we have decided to stay in for the Songkran Holidays, we never get to do much but sleep, eat, nap, read, then repeat ;) Well, our weekend went as calmly and as quietly as we can manage. And looking forward to a great week. Have a wonderful week beautiful people! and remember

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Good Day! beautiful people! Happy Easter for yesterday (or the day before yesterday). Life had been good to us these past few days. And although there was nothing so "big" about our days, we are very thankful and happy that our family of three... husband/ryan, kodi and me sustained yet another week of ordinary ;)

Well, I do and will honestly say, that once again, the past few days I toss and turn in my sleep some nights, anxious of the future. Yes, partly because I am worried, but most of it because the future suddenly becomes so interesting again. Feels like I am suddenly jolted from a long coma. And by coma I mean, the fear of being sick again, of my life staring at a glass hour. And although, in as much as I wanted to live in the now and live a day at a time... I am starting to make plans. To see a purpose and I feel like after a long while of just waiting for another sunrise, I am starting to dream again. To live again.

Our week was actually quite eventful to say... I did a couple of task here and there and made a lot of plans too. And yes, I am starting to feel like I am normal again. That a dreadful cloud had been lifted and I can see so much of me, my dreams and promises of a good life of days to come. But I always see to it that I cherish every moment I live a day being hopeful. Well, I can say that part of my healing comes from the lesson I learn from our little Kodi. You know what they say about dogs having no past and no future. They only live for the moment and it may be true that they don't have that much memory of sadness, hatred and regrets...  (I would really want to think it that way). Like Cesar Millan said, "Dogs live in the moment. They don't regret the past or worry about the future. If we can learn to appreciate in what's happening in the here and now, we will experience a richness or living that other members of the animal kingdom enjoy."

Well, human lives are indeed more complicated than that. And that we may have to worry a little, dream a little, get anxious, get scared, and to try to live at the moment to be able to live. “Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.” ― Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum LP

P.S. On to my journey towards a healthy, frugal and clean lifestyle. For now, I have somehow found my balance. I can't really say I am a full on vegan since I do still have to include eggs and honey on my diet. But aside from that I haven't used or consume any other animal products for a while now and it feels so good. And although I admit that we are still hoarding some things contrary to being minimal (we still hang on to some things important to us. Like our precious books.) However, this month, I will be doing some "frugal experiments" and see if it will work of us. And of course I will be sharing it with you so please stay tune for more updates my beaugorgeous! Have a wonderful week ahead!

I was letting go of a thing few days ago and realized... if that thing happened to be of such value, then it would be really difficult to trash it out eyh? But life is such. It is so much easier to let go of things we don't really value and hold on to something we cherish the most. Like those that we spent so much of our time, effort and money, and most of those that touch our hearts deeply. So how do we really value things? or is there really value on such things? I have often ask myself lately on what is important to me now. What is it that gives me joy and what is it that I would treasure the most. I am not talking about life here, for obviously, it ranks the most important to all of us. So what is it that defines me now. Is it a sense of purpose? to answer a calling to an ultimate need? to consume myself to human activism? to embrace an eminent responsibility? to console humanity? or to sit back watch the world go by, give a sigh of relief and let things be. How much do we give value to living? or are we too consume with all the "this is what its suppose to be" that we forget what is important. That with all the generalities in life we put everything in one tag and seek for more. How many more "valuable" things we need to have to be able to find our sense of self.

Probably one of the greatest challenge for me and my journey to minimalism is how to really identify what I need, what is important and what should be cherished. I have heard and read so many claims about finding self worth through wanting less but is it really that easy? or is it just a trend? I have realized that this is more than just decluttering the trash you have been keeping your whole life. It is accepting what you are going to be with far far less than what the world owns. And then be happy of the choice you make without rationalizations and fancy/trendy definitions. Without being so self upholding and accepting that others have different choices than yours. So this is where I lay my thoughts to rest. To realized that what I value the most would certainly defines how I see myself regardless of not wanting more. So would I sit back and watch the world go by? definitely not perhaps... but I will find value in the most simple things I can do, the most simple things I can find and be happy on the thought that I can see in myself the change I wish to see even if it doesn't make any difference to the world. Have a wonderful week ahead wonderful people.

We finally arrived to the Land of Smiles. And although it is such non-explainable mix of emotions, realizing that I will, after a long while, will be (somehow) on my own. I am on my way to a normal life or will it be normal again? Well, I may not often show it but I fear for the future sometimes. I fear that fear will consume me and will take most of my dreams. I haven't let myself become sad yet and my hope is that I will never be.

So here I am very very anxious... and yes, being sick has changed me but I am still my own person I guess. The moment I step into my abyss, I was all of a sudden struck with too much adrenaline that I needed to contain myself. Not to mention that the house I left six months ago needed some serious cleaning... really, husband? oh well with all my love and understanding, it wasn't so easy being alone either while wife is away getting herself healthy again. No pressure then my love... a messy house is just a house, but I am home baby ;)

Well okay, how is it being back? well, aside from the fact that we are still looking for an oncologist who can replaced the wonderful doc I left in the Philippines, I still do have to battle the thought that I am not yet hundred percent well and it's still been six months and I need to slow down. What I had was not just any flu...so I needed to contain myself and stop rushing. And there's the fun of exploring through a good healthy lifestyle... yes, yes, I still do sneak out some polvoron (sweets we got from the philippines) but I am proud of myself for staying away from any meat for a while now so yey! for self control! But still mom needs to remind me to watch my diet and don't "eat too much"... I just got back from cancer, not fat camp so eating too much is a bonus. I love you mom. I know you wish the best of health for me. And again, I thanks you and dad for being there for me and my sweet parents in law. Your love and support come pouring like an April rain that never stops. I love you!

So, how did I survive it? well, I am aware that cancer can have different effect on different people. But this is how I become to managed it anyway. First, I never ever deprived myself of food. Never. You see when you have to go through chemo, the dr. will make sure that all the blood lab results to normal as much as possible like your hemoglobin, platelets, weight, etc. or else chemo will be cancel ed and postponed till lab test shows what is appropriate. So eating as much as I can and getting a lot of sleep really helps me maintain all the blood work and was never ever late for chemo. I have a very good relationship with food and I am thankful that it never changed after all. I still was able to eat "a little bit" what the dr. said, of ice cream, cheese, chocolates and of course I snack on lots and lots of fruits and veggies.  Second, I only listened to my Doctor. I know there's a lot of wonderful and kind intentions but after all it is the doctor that knows about your illness. So I make sure I listen and don't get mixed up with all the "anti cancer fad". But like I said, to each his own. Whatever works best is just as great. It's your body, listen to it.

Then I enjoyed my time doing things I find interesting. I learned some new hobbies and most of all I learned how to cook and I am very excited and challenged to finally embrace my way in the kitchen.

I know, I know it's not that fancy of putting together my food but at least there's some effort in it ;) Well, excuse my random thoughts for now but I sure needed to start writing somehow. Till next time my beauties!

Hey beauties! how's everything going in your side of the universe? I hope you guys are carrying on and still hopping like excited little bunnies because... c'mon its friday! and time to partehy!

Well, I was at the doctor yesterday and I am very happy that everything is going well for now and that there is nothing to worry about except well... I have again gained 2 kilos more of weight which the doctor, with all her enthusiasm combined, explained that it's a good thing and it only means my body is getting back to its normal function. So, yey!

Honestly, I don't feel like anything except that weird feeling that I only had a flu and now I am getting rid of it. Might be defense mechanism kicking in but often times I'd like to think that cancer was just a very very bad flu gone ballistic. So, despite the fact that I am now a certified survivor and had to eat 5 combination of meds for breakfast, I am very thrilled to call myself a bionic woman (barf) LOL! believe me I had to look like Gullum one time and it was a not a common sight my precious. Now, I am totally rocking the bunny hunter Mr. Elmer Fudd look...and yes I can pass for a Missus. If only I am not already married to a gorgeous man...peace sweetie :)

So anyway, like I said, I was at the doctor yesterday for my 21 days follow up check up after my last chemo. And you see, I was actually pretty worried... like I don't know... maybe worried that the big old scary Mr. Cancer might come back unexpected again... So, I thought I might as well get that anti cervical cancer vaccine just to make sure. And so there I was smiling at the doctor excited for no reason (it's just me ...and probably my crazy cancer head)... and in my high pitch excited voice I burst in and ask the doctor..."oh can I get the anti cervical cancer vaccine dr.? and then she was like..."oh but honey, you don't have a cervix. all you've got is your VJay and nothing more." and I was like "great! that means I don't need to get the vaccine anymore." LOL! the dr. indeed had *taketh and what am I to do?

Then I thought, there goes my womanhood...flushed down the drain and why am I smiling? I guess because I realized that everything turns out the total opposite of what "every woman should be". I cannot be a mother, I have a michilin neck and I can't even blow dry my hair, curl my lashes and my eyebrows? honey, it disappears before you can even blink. Thanks to the non-cancer friendly eyebrow liner or haven't they ever invented one already? oh well, I have become by far the epitome of imperfections. And I'm okay ;) because after wiping off the amazing tricks of makeup, it is still the person sitting in front of the mirror that you still love. The you no one may know, the you who have smile through every struggle. And because you know that behind those scars and bulges there is a brave person staring back at you... then you smile.

Well, of course you don't have to be something else or to be struggling or to necessarily have cancer (heaven forbid) to be brave and be strong and be bold. You can be just the way you are. Like they said, "you are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful." Till next time... and oh I might be coming up with some reviews and some "how to" tips soon. So, please stay tune for it. Have a wonderful day beautiful people.
